Whether highlighting the year’s finest work, talking shop with a panel of innovative creatives or just providing the perfect environment for networking with other artists, The Conference always offers an array of outstanding opportunities for designers in TV marketing. This year, with a series of Brand/Rebrand Highlights sessions along with such perennial favorites as State of Design and the PromaxBDA Hot Spots Showcase, the bounty for designers is especially rich.
Check out our playlist below of can’t-miss sessions for designers attending the Conference 2014.
TUESDAY, JUNE 10
More Than Just a Pretty Space: Exploring New Frontiers of Design
2:00pm, Grand Ballroom
Paola Antonelli brought video games to the Museum of Modern Art’s collection in 2012 and an uproar ensued over what constitutes art. But Antonelli, who is MOMA’s senior curator in the Department of Architecture and Design and the museum’s director of research and development, wasn’t concerned with what art is, but where design is. The answer? It’s everywhere, including video games. At this session she’ll cover how design now infuses everything from the Internet to sustainability, relating its power to enrich our daily life in ways you may never have imagined.
Out of This World Design
4:15pm, Grand Ballroom
In the perfect segue from Paola Antonelli’s session exploring new frontiers of design comes a session that takes design to the final frontier: space. In Out of This World Design, Dava Newman, professor of aeronautics and astronautics and engineering systems at MIT, presents the BioSuit, a slim-fitting compression outfit she helped develop that is intended to help Mars-bound astronauts move more freely in space. Acutely aware of both the suit’s functionality and aesthetics, Newman will unpack a fascinating fusion of science and design.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11
State of Design
11:00am, Grand Ballroom
If Tuesday’s sessions reaffirmed design’s ever-increasing interactive power over all facets of life, this session will demonstrate how that manifests in entertainment. Through a series of carefully curated clips from the past 12 months of short films, game cinematics, music videos, advertising spots, branded content and more, “Stash Magazine” editor Stephen Price will show how the tools of design are changing and how our industry is rising to the challenge.
Capturing a Campaign: A TEN Exhibition Conversation
2:30pm, Grand Ballroom
Go home, Vine and Instagram – great key artists have been telling stories way before you came around, and in nothing more than a single frame. At this session, some of TV’s most revered masters of the craft step out from behind the lens to reveal their own creative journeys and how they are keeping pace with the rapidly changing state of the industry and design in general.
Brand/Rebrand Highlights – TVN Poland, TV12 Sweden, A&E
2:30pm, Sutton
Nothing showcases the all-encompassing power of design like a good old fashioned rebrand, where everything from on-air promos to app graphics to web interactivity must not only be overhauled, but made to work together. This session goes in-depth with the masterminds behind some of the year’s outstanding rebrands, including TVN Poland’s magically minimal logo work, TV12 Sweden’s hauntingly beautiful transition to a lifestyle network, and A&E’s rockin’ Be Original campaign.
Brand/Rebrand Highlights – The Weather Channel, TV Guide Network
4:15pm, Sutton
Talk about the importance of design in a rapidly changing landscape! The Weather Channel’s rebrand had to take into account an entirely new system of data and maps communication, in addition to graphics, new sonic identity and all that usual fun stuff. Plus, creatives on TV Guide Network’s rebrand talk in redesigning a classic information-based brand as a cutting-edge, full-blown entertainment destination.
THURSDAY, JUNE 12
100 Years of Title Sequence Design
10:30am, Americas Hall 1
A well-done title sequence can live in the viewer’s memory longer than the show its introducing, and in some cases, for a century and more. Join Art of the Title founder and editor-in-chief Ian Albinson for an in-depth look at some of the greatest title sequences from 100 years of film, TV, video games and other platforms where the skill and sacrifice behind this incredible art form are often sorely overlooked.
The Art of Title Design
Directly following 100 Year of Title Sequence Design, hear a session with creatives behind some of TV’s most influential and innovative program titles, including “True Detective,” “Vikings” and “SNL.”
The PromaxBDA Hot Spots Showcase
2:00pm, Grand Ballroom
This popular annual session is pure delight: A roundup of our favorite promo spots from the past year. Hosted by the witty and wise Dan Bragg, SVP of marketing for Science Channel, and Mark Valentine, creative director and co-owner of ANATOMY, the PromaxBDA Hot Spots Showcase never fails to entertain, inspire, and evoke mad jealousy that you didn’t come up with it yourself (unless you did, in which case we salute you.)
