CBS revealed Thursday the early renewals of 16 series—six comedies, nine dramas, one reality series and two newsmagazines—in addition to the previously announced returns of top drama NCIS and top scripted show The Big Bang Theory.
What’s Coming Back
New series Bull, new comedy Kevin Can Wait and 60 Minutes all have been number-one ranking shows in their time slots for the network and are slated for the 2017-2018 season.
Other well-performing freshman series that will be back include MacGyver, Man with a Plan and Superior Donuts. Here’s the complete list, as of now, of what’s being renewed:
- The Big Bang Theory
- Blue Bloods
- Bull
- Hawaii Five-O
- Kevin Can Wait
- Life in Pieces
- MacGyver
- Madam Secretary
- Man with a Plan
- Mom
- NCIS
- NCIS: Los Angeles
- NCIS: New Orleans
- Scorpion
- Superior Donuts
- Survivor
- 48 Hours
- 60 Minutes
What’s Up in the Air
Not on the list—so far anyway—are 2 Broke Girls, Criminal Minds, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Elementary, Ransom and Code Black. The fate of The Great Indoors and The Amazing Race are also up in the air.
CBS will announce additional pick-ups at a later date, and will showcase its new fall schedule during the network’s upfront on May 17 in New York City.
What’s Being Chopped
While the renewal of many shows depends on factors like DVR returns and how pilots perform, it’s clear CBS will not invest in Doubt, starring Katherine Heigl which was canceled after two episodes, along with Jason Katims’ medical drama Pure Genius, which saw a reduction in episodes and has also been canceled.
Following the death of Bill Paxton, Training Day is also not expected to return.
