In week two of the broadcast network’s fall premieres, CBS’ Code Black debuted on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 10 p.m., with a 1.6 among adults 18-49 and 8.54 million viewers, according to live plus same day fast national estimates from Nielsen. That was 20% less than Stalker opened with last fall in the same time period.
The series stars Marcia Gay Harden and Luis Guzman as medical professionals working to save lives in a hectic Los Angeles emergency room.
Fox’s Empire, in the second outing of its second season, dropped back 19% to a still dominant 5.4 in adults 18-49, down from the 6.7 that the show earned for its season premiere. Empire is expected to jump 33% to a 7.2 when the live plus three days ratings come in.
That was also more than enough to give Fox the Wednesday night win, averaging a 3.7 across the night, compared to CBS’ 2.0, ABC’s 1.9, NBC’s 1.5 and The CW’s 0.4. The CW has yet to premiere its fall season with The Flash and Arrow returning next week and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend debuting on Monday, Oct. 12, along with the season-two premiere of Jane the Virgin.
Fox’s Rosewood, leading into Empire at 8 p.m., fell back 21% in week two to a 1.9 in adults 18-49 from last week’s 2.4 debut. Some 6.2 million viewers tuned in. The Morris Chestnut-starrer moved up to a 2.2 from a 1.7 in its second half-hour, indicating that it’s benefiting from its powerful Empire lead-out.
On CBS, Survivor: Cambodia averaged a 2.3, down 8% from the previous week’s season premiere. Criminal Minds, premiering season 11, debuted at a 2.0, up 5% from last spring’s season finale but down 26% from last fall’s premiere.
The Middle kicked off ABC’s comedy block with a 2.2, up 5% from last week. The Goldbergs turned in a 2.3, down 4%. Modern Family was the highest-rated comedy of the night at a 2.9, down 9% from last week, but Black-ish lost quite a bit of that lead, declining 25% to a 1.8 from last week’s 2.4.
Nashville, at 10 p.m., was steady compared to last week’s fourth season premiere at a 1.2.
Mysteries of Laura kicked off NBC’s night at 8 p.m. with a flat 1.2. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit dropped 6% from last week to a 1.7, while the season premiere of Chicago P.D. held that lead-in, moving up 18% from last spring’s 1.4 season finale, but declining 20% compared to last fall’s opener.
