London-based Cookie Studio, founded by creative director Brazilian native Thiago Maia and formerly known as Cake, is returning to its roots with a new studio in São Paulo, Brazil.

“Cookie Studios is a design and animation studio with a focus on solving problems for clients,” said Maia.

Cookie’s work is about 75 percent animation and 25 percent live-action, and that live-action is usually tied to animation. And Cookie does any and all types of animation, including cel and 3D.

“Animation is the best way to tell a story without worrying about what the subject is,” he said. “When you have animation, you can say so much about what is going on in the world today without being seen as aggressive.”

Hailing from Brazil himself, it makes sense for Maia to want to set up shop in the Brazilian capital, where there’s a large talent pool from which to choose.

“There are a lot of people there—many of whom are attracted by the art and creative scene—so they need to push harder to compete,” he said. “The best ones survive and thrive”

Maia seeks to expand Cookie Studio’s work throughout South America as well as in the larger market of North America. In Europe, Cookie Studio has worked with such TV and video clients as Amazon, BBC One, Cartoon Network, ITV and UKTV. In the U.S, it’s done work for FXX and Nickelodeon—two networks that offer animated programs—among others.

While TV is an obvious place for Cookie to be, it also has done work for consumer brands, such as Fitbit and Pringles and more:

“Everything runs on animation,” said Maia. “A lot of people think animation is just cartoons but you see animation in many places every day and you probably don’t even realize it.”
