With Emmy ballots due Friday (June 20) and nominations out July 10, it’s high time to hand out TV awards.

On Thursday night, AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” were named best drama and best comedy, respectively.

“True Detective"’s Matthew McConaughey, continuing his awards streak after walking off with this year’s Best Actor Award at the Oscars, bested “Breaking Bad"’s Bryan Cranston to be named best actor in a drama. “Orphan Black"’s Tatiana Maslany repeated last year’s win as best dramatic actress.

“The Big Bang Theory"’s multiple-Emmy winner Jim Parsons was named best comedy actor, while “Veep"’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has won the Emmy for this role for the past two years, was named best comedy actress.

FX’s “Fargo” was named best mini-series, and it is widely considered to lead the field headed into Emmy nominations. The series’ Billy Bob Thornton was named best lead actor in a mini-series, while newcomer Allison Tolman was named best supporting actress in a mini-series.

Jessica Lange won for best actress in a movie or mini-series for FX’s “American Horror Story: Coven,” while Matt Bomer won for best supporting actor in a movie or mini for HBO’s “The Normal Heart.”

Allison Janney took home two trophies: one for best supporting actress in a comedy for CBS’ “Mom,” and one for best guest performer for “Masters of Sex.”

The executive producer of both “American Horror Story” and “The Normal Heart,” Ryan Murphy, won the Broadcast Television Journalist Association’s Genius Award.

The Critics’ Choice Television Awards, with its close proximity to the Emmys, offer some hints as to the leading Emmy contenders. “True Detective” and “Breaking Bad” are expected to go head to head at the upcoming awards fest in both the series and acting categories, while Fargo and The Normal Heart will likely face off in the acting categories, although the TV Academy this year separated the overall movie and mini-series category.

Brief Take: The Emmys has become strong marketing point for premium networks such as HBO, AMC and FX. While other awards, including Critics’ Choice, don’t have that kind of clout, every little bit helps in the run up to the big show in August.
