“Everyone knows who won, but not everyone knows how,” a balding Benedict Cumberbatch says in Channel 4’s Brexit: The Uncivil War.

The actor was aged up for his role as Dominic Cummings, political advisor and lead strategist for 2016’s Vote Leave campaign that led to the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union.

The trailer features him speaking directly to the camera in the aftermath of the decision.

“We live in a multiverse of different branches of histories,” he says. “And in a different branch of history, I was never here; some of you voted differently, and this never happened – but I was, and it did.”

The series explores the behind-the-scenes political tactics that garnered voter support and led to the campaign’s success. It also stars Rory Kinnear, John Heffernan, Richard Goulding, Paul Ryan, Liz White and Oliver Maltman.

Brexit: The Uncivil War is written by playwright James Graham (Quiz, Ink), and directed by Toby Haynes (Black Mirror, Sherlock). It’s set to debut in 2019 on Channel 4.
