Beautiful scenes unfold in the first-person explorer game The First Tree, which follows the stories of two interconnected beings: one of a fox looking for her missing cubs, and another of a son reconnecting with his estranged father in Alaska.
Players assume the role of the fox along a journey that “crescendos at the source of life, and perhaps result in an understanding of death,” says Nintendo in its launch trailer for the game on Switch.
Along the way, players can uncover artifacts and stories from the son’s life as he becomes intertwined in the fox’s journey towards The First Tree.
An emotional game meant to pull at the heartstrings, it’s a short, meditative game focused on a powerful story, with some light puzzle solving, platforming, and no enemies. It also includes updated content such as a developer commentary mode, new achievements, and additional secrets to uncover, and a gorgeous soundtrack by artists such as Message to Bears, Lowercase Noises, and Josh Kramer.
The First Tree is available on Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. It was recently nominated for Best Game and Best Music at the 2018 Emotional Games Awards, and has been exhibited in places like the Smithsonian American Art Museum and PAX West.
