Argentina is the latest country to say yes to Keshet International’s new singing and second-screen format, “Rising Star,” which will premiere this summer in the U.S. on ABC.

The show will launch in Argentina this fall on Telefe Argentina.

“When it comes to selecting new formats, we value originality and quality as well as creative and technical innovation and multi-platforms,” said Dario Turovelzky, Telefe’s programming manager. “There are several talented formats in the world but not all formats are innovative. ‘Rising Star Argentina’ is a new and exciting challenge. We are certain that it will generate great expectations and will be successful in continuing to strengthen the relationship with our audience through innovative platforms.”

Argentina is the second Latin American country to pick up ‘Rising Star,’ joining Brazil, which will air it on Rede Globo. The Israeli show launched at MIPCOM 2013 and has been picked up by more than 20 broadcasters, including the UK’s ITV, Spain’s Atresmedia, Portugal’s TVI, Italy’s Toro and France’s M6 Group.

Performers on ‘Rising Star’ debut on stage alone in front of a giant wall of LED TV screens. Viewers vote, via an app, and the performer can only officially enter the competition by securing more than 70% of the viewers’, judges’ and live audience’s vote. From that point on, the viewers are constantly asked to participate in the show by voting via the app.

‘Rising Star’ is produced by Tedy Productions for Keshet Broadcasting. The show debuted on Keshet’s Channel 2 and aired from September to December 2013, with more than 10 million votes cast via the app, which was downloaded more than 1.5 million times.

Brief Take: ‘Rising Star’ is yet another attempt to turn an important format into a hit singing show, but with American Idol returning down 23% to its lowest premiere rating yet, and X Factor only a marginal success, viewers’ appetites for singing shows may be sated.
