Several tech companies are looking to get in on the future of TV content, but Apple wants to build an actual HDTV set to air that content.
Apple has been in discussions with media giants including Viacom, HBO and ESPN about putting their content on its TV service, which is still in development. Now, according to reports, it wants to manufacture a HDTV as well. The Apple-branded set would push content to consumers through apps as opposed to through a cable-TV subscription. That opens the possibility that Apple will become something like a cable company itself, only with content delivered entirely over the Internet.

Brief Take: An Apple TV set could be a branded centerpiece, presiding over consumers’ living rooms, and allowing Apple to control every aspect of the viewing experience. But before Apple can put out a TV, it has to convince top-tier content providers to give it something to show on it.
