Taking a page from Hulu, which made such a splash with its Super Bowl ads for The Handmaid’s Tale last year, Amazon Prime Video will run a 60-second spot for its new drama, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, in Super Bowl LII on NBC this Sunday.
“Given the colossal scope and scale of the series coupled with the popularity of Tom Clancy’s novels, we knew Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan would be a natural fit for Prime Video’s first Super Bowl ad,” said Mike Benson, head of marketing for Amazon Studios, in a statement. “The global nature of the audience provides us with a unique opportunity to give viewers a look at this thrilling new series coming to Prime.”
The spot will air immediately after the half-time show starring Justin Timberlake. It centers on the Ryan character and is set to audio from presidents past and current, including John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Donald J. Trump, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan. Devlin and Ed Sheeran also team to perform Bob Dylan’s iconic “All Along the Watchtower,” which plays in the background.
Hulu went on to win the Emmy and Golden Globe for best drama for The Handmaid’s Tale after launching promos for the series in Super Bowl LI. Because Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is premiering on Aug. 31, it will not be eligible for this year’s Emmy awards, although it will be eligible for Golden Globes in 2019.
The series stars John Krasinski (The Office, 13 Hours) as Jack Ryan, who also has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck in various versions of the Tom Clancy novels on which the series is based.
In what amounts to a Jack Ryan origin story, the up-and-coming CIA analyst finds himself on a dangerous assignment in the field for the first time. The one-hour, eight-episode dramatic series also stars The Wire’s Wendell Pierce and Abbie Cornish, just coming off a starring role in the Academy Award-nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
