Two best friends are eagerly anticipating their freshman year of high school, despite the fact that one of them is battling cancer in Netflix’s teen sitcom Alexa & Katie.

In what Netflix describes as “a funny and heartwarming show,” the series stars Paris Berelc (Mighty Med, Lab Rats: Elite Force), who is undergoing cancer treatment as ninth grade kicks into gear.

“Why didn’t you tell me instead of seeing me, everybody is going to see cancer,” she says in the trailer. “Everybody is going to know me as the sick girl. I’m so much more than that.”

But her outgoing personality and enthusiasm for life never falter, especially with her loyal and awkwardly adorable best friend Katie (Isabel May) by her side, according to the streamer. Be it at school, at home or in the hospital, they stand by each other through thick and thin, serving as what Netflix says are role models for modern-day female friendships.

“At times they’re left feeling like outsiders, during a period when what seems to matter most is fitting in,” Netflix says.

The American Cancer Society is participating in the show’s launch, as it works to improve awareness and support for childhood cancers.

The series also stars Tiffani Thiessen (White Collar, Saved By The Bell) as Lori, Alexa’s determined and protective mother. Other cast members include Emery Kelly, Eddie Shin, Jolie Jenkins and Finn Carr.

Alexa & Katie is created by Hannah Montana’s Heather Wordham, with Matthew Carlson (Malcolm in the Middle, Samantha Who?) as showrunner.

It premieres March 23 on Netflix.
