Ryan Murphy’s fourth installment of American Horror Story now ranks as FX’s most-watched telecast, attracting 10 million viewers for its debut on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
American Horror Story: Freak Show, which boasts more than 13 million viewers when factoring in encore airings of the premiere episode, also has convinced FX to pick up the anthology for a 13-episode fifth season to debut October 2015.
Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s American Horror Story first premiered on FX in 2011, and this month FX announced plans for a spinoff series, American Crime Story, that will start production next year.
“The American Horror Story anthology has had the highest growth trajectory of any show in FX history, not to mention an unprecedented track record of success in awards recognition,” said John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions. “We expect AHS: Freak Show and the next incarnation of AHS to further its legacy.”
Also on Monday, Fox announced that it picked up an additional six episodes for its pre-comics series, Gotham, bring the show to a full-season order. The series first debuted on the broadcaster on Sept. 22 to plenty of buzz and fanfare, becoming Fox’s highest-rated fall drama in 14 years.
