Long before Twitter was a (massively profitable) thing, Adult Swim was throwing up a steady stream of bite-sized factoids, programming news, witticisms and other non sequiturs during commercial breaks. The text-based bumps, consisting of stark white type against a black backdrop and minimal graphics at best, have become a definitive part of the Adult Swim brand, to the point where the network is now giving its viewers the opportunity to get in on the fun of not only creating them (which fans had already been doing) but airing them as well.

The new Adult Swim Bump Builder app, available in the App Store and Google Play, is as simple, and addictive, as the promotional content it’s derived from. Users type the words they want to say, add text “cards” or remove cards depending on how they want their message to flow, select music from an array of pre-recorded tracks, and press submit. The fan-created bumps are viewable to anyone on the platform, including Adult Swim staff, who will select ones they like for inclusion during the linear telecast.

With its launch sponsored by AT&T, Adult Swim Bump Builder also includes a built-in social feed that lets users talk to other fans through the app, and to network reps as well. In a novel twist, Adult Swim has even included a syncing feature, providing trivia, polls, never-before-seen pilots and other exclusive content that can be unlocked by watching the on-air bumps that show during Monday night programming. With these elements, along with the user-friendly, incredibly easy-to-use bump building tool, Adult Swim’s new app, like the bumps that serve it, shows that deep viewer engagement need not be complicated.
