NBCUniversal and its owned station group led the pack at this year’s fourth annual PromaxBDALocal Awards in Las Vegas with 20 total gold, silver and bronze awards.
“This recognition is a tribute to the great work being done every day at our NBC and Telemundo stations that connects with our audiences and truly reflects the communities we serve,” said Therese Gamba, senior vice president of marketing and acquired programming, NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations. “It is gratifying to see the teams at our stations, along with our in-house graphics and promotions partners, NBC Artworks and NBCUniversal Skycastle, being recognized for their terrific work. We also salute our colleagues at NBC affiliates across the country for their strong showing in this year’s PromaxBDA Awards.”
“It has been a great year for NBC in primetime, late night, sports and news,” said Scot Chastain, senior vice president of affiliate marketing and development, NBC Broadcasting, and co-chairman of the board at PromaxBDA. “Our NBC stations, both owned and affiliates, have done great creative work all year long and it is very satisfying to see the talented people at the local stations get the proper acknowledgement.”
NBCUniversal was followed by Tribune Broadcasting with 16 awards, LIN Media and CBS with 10 each, and Gannett with nine.
The annual PromaxBDALocal Awards honor the best in marketing and design from the local market, and are handed out during the annual Station Summit gathering of networks, station groups, syndicators and local broadcasters. With more than 40 awards and 150 nominations, the Local Awards recognize the best in a variety of categories from Art Direction, to Special News Reports, to Live Event Spots. Comedian Loni Love—one of the hosts of Warner Bros.’ new daytime syndicated talk show “The Real”—emceed the ceremony during a gala luncheon at The Mirage Hotel and Casino.
Canada’s Bell Media Agency was the biggest agency winner, snagging 22 individual awards, more than any other company. Bell Media also was named Global Excellence Marketing Team of the Year earlier this month at the PromaxBDA Global Excellence Promotion, Marketing & Design Awards in New York City. The company took home that title for the second year in a row.
Another Canadian company—Groupe TVA—racked up the second-highest number of individual wins at nine.
WTNH (New Haven-Hartford) and NBC Artworks were the most-awarded individual American entrants with six wins each.
“Every day, my goal is to strengthen our brand through the creative, inspirational work of our tremendously talented marketing team,” said Paul Spingola, WTNH’s director of marketing and digital media. “For our work to be recognized by our peers with these awards is both affirming and exciting. We are incredibly proud to receive this honor.”
Other major winners include FOX50/WRAZ-TV (Raleigh-Durham), Tribune Creative West, CBS2 KCAL9 (Los Angeles), WGN-TV (Chicago), and WGRZ (Buffalo). [Ed: We’ve included a more detailed tally down below.]

Winners of the annual Just Cause Awards were announced at the same ceremony, honoring broadcasters’ pro-social commitments in their communities. The awards recognize distinguished public service announcement (PSA) work in small, medium and large markets and those committed to nonprofit partnerships, pro-social causes and local community.
KOBI-TV/NBC5 (Medford-Klamath Falls, Ore.) took the small market prize, WATE (Knoxville, Tenn.) won in the medium market category, and KDFW FOX 4/KDFI MY 27 (Dallas-Fort Forth) won the large market awards.
“With budget issues, art, music, and even field trips have been cut from public schools,” said Bob Wise, vice president and general manager of KOBI-TV, in a statement. “One day out of the month a business gives a portion of their sales into the ‘YES’ program, and we take those funds to make a big difference for the kids in our community. Our entire station and our partners are honored to be recognized for this work.”
All of the winning Just Cause campaigns can be found on the PromaxBDA YouTube page.
This year, PromaxBDA’s Station Summit hosted more than 1,200 broadcast professionals from 50 states representing all six major networks, including: ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox, NBC and Telemundo.
“Our organization is committed to celebrating the best local work being produced each year,” said Stacy La Cotera, PromaxBDA’s interim co-general manager and vice president, board relations and global awards development. “This year’s Station Summit has been our biggest yet and our award winners have served as inspiration to everyone here, and everyone in the industry.”
