Warning: Spoilers for season 2 of USA’s Mr. Robot ahead.
Writer, director, and showrunner Sam Esmail has created an immersive universe that is USA Network’s Mr. Robot. Starting as a summer breakout hit for the network, the show is full of unique twists and extra tie-ins that bring fans further understanding of the show’s elaborate story.
Although the second season of Mr. Robot resulted in somewhat of a sophomore slump for the show, this hasn’t slowed down Esmail as he creates detailed additional content. This includes a VR experience released at San Diego Comic-Con set just prior to the events of season one, short film The Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie, and the recently released Mr. Robot Red Wheelbarrow tie-in book.

In season two, Elliot’s journal Red Wheelbarrow was featured prominently. The Red Wheelbarrow book elaborates on the Mr. Robot story by giving an undiluted look into Elliot’s thoughts during the first half of the second season.

Written by Esmail and show writer Courtney Looney, the journal feels quite believably written by Elliot Alderson (Emmy winner Rami Malek) and includes interjections from his other personality Mr. Robot as well as detailed drawings of what’s being discussed. Even further, there are notes written by Hot Carla, a smaller side-character from season two, and include removable inserts that add to the journal’s story.

Red Wheelbarrow is intricately detailed with hidden Easter eggs for fans (such as a QR code that leads to http://www.conficturaindustries.com/, a newspaper clipping that mentions http://www.wellicksightings.com/ and more) and provides a deep dive into the actual events that happened to Elliot while he was imprisoned. The journal’s additional content gives show-watchers more of the story that was missed thanks to Elliot’s second-season delusions, such as daily kitchen duty, prison fights, interactions with Leon, Hot Carla and more.

By publishing this journal tie-in, Esmail has given fans access to Elliot’s inner thoughts and is creating a larger world for fans to dig into while they wait for the next season of Mr. Robot.
