PromaxBDA Promo Boot Camp is the place at The Conference 2014 where promo producers, editors and creators can gather to sharpen their skills and hone their techniques. This year’s Boot Camp has speakers from TV networks, multimedia marketing agencies, design studios and social media networks to talk about the best practices in promo creation and design.
Below are a few of the highlights of this year’s event:
WEDNESDAY:
This year’s Promo Boot Camp will kick off with “Packing a Punch: Brand Storytelling Through Promo” (Gramercy, 9 a.m.), designed to help promo makers tell an entire story in as little as 10 seconds. Pivot’s Murphy Gilson and We Write Good Owner Becky Wilson will present how to pack in an entire narrative in a short promo or 30-second spot. Between the two of them, Gilson and Wilson have worked on campaigns for Fox, NFL Network, Discovery, National Geographic Channel, The CW, E! and CBS, among many others. Promo Boot Camp veteran Linda Button speaks Wednesday about the biggest myths in promo writing and shares examples of copywriting in her interactive workshop, “Burn Your Keyboard” (Gramercy, 9:45 a.m.).
HBO’s Sabrina Caluori will lay out the importance of including social media in promo campaigns in her session, “Think Thinking Social Isn’t Your Job? Think Again!” (Gramercy, 11 a.m.) According to Caluori, everyone from the PA to the creative director to the VP should know the basics of social. Find out what she says are the best tricks of the trade when it comes to new platforms and new campaigns. Delving further into the world of social campaigns, Andrea Kerr Redniss, of media and marketing agency Media Storm, will deliver case studies demonstrating how successful cross-platform marketing strategies have used social platforms (Gramercy, 11:45 a.m.). She’ll also peek at the future of social media and tip off promo producers on what they should be prepared to see next. Niche’s Rob Fishman and Darren Lachtman will help promo creators seamlessly integrate their campaigns into social platforms such as Vine, Instagram, Snapchat and Tumblr (Gramercy, 3:15 p.m.).
Alberto Scirocco, creative director of motion and design studio leftchannel, wants to encourage promo creators to seek new sources of inspiration. “That very magical thing that makes it so easy for us to connect and share ideas may also be behind the homogenization of our work into derivative oblivion.” As show promos start to look more and more like one another, Scirocco wants to introduce some ways to stand out from the crowd in his session, “Internet Killed the Promo Star: Goose Your Game by Weaning off the Web” (Gramercy, 2:30 p.m.).
THURSDAY:
Sought-after speaker Lee Hunt will present his perennial session, “Dynamic Branding” (Gramercy, 9 a.m.) on Thursday, June 12, breaking down how networks effectively brand themselves according to content and the ever-evolving TV landscape. Then, networks executives from Nickelodeon, National Geographic Channels, Oxygen and Pivot share career advice on how creatives can make the leap from an effective member of a team to a leader in two sessions on Thursday, “What Got You Here Won’t Necessarily Get You There: Career Advice from the Top” (Gramercy, 2 p.m.) and “Building a Creative Career: The Transition From Maker to Leader” (Gramercy, 2:30 p.m.). Then don’t miss “State of Our Art” (Grand Ballroom, 4:45 p.m.), presented by Comedy Central’s Walter Levitt and A&E’s Guy Slattery and filled with examples of the best work “from our television universe and beyond.”
Promo Boot Camp attendees can also attend The Conference sessions on Tuesday, June 10, which include:
