Supergirl didn’t live up to expectations on CBS, but The CW’s Entertainment President Mark Pedowitz jumped at the chance to pick the show up. When it premieres on The CW on Mondays at 8 p.m. this fall, Pedowitz expects it to be the “number one or two highest-rated show” on the network, he said at the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles on Thursday.

“When Supergirl became available, I couldn’t sign up for it fast enough. We recognized immediately that it had to be on Monday at 8,” Pedowitz said.

As a result of adding Supergirl, The CW decided to move Crazy Ex-Girlfriend —the lead and creator of which, Rachael Bloom, was just named TCA’s outstanding comedy performer of 2016 – to Fridays at 9 p.m. The CW has made some headway over the past couple of years with its mix of female-driven shows, such as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin, and superhero shows from the DC Universe.

With so many superhero-focused shows on its air, the executive producers are planning some big crossover events like one last season between Arrow and The Flash. Supergirl joins those two shows as well as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow on The CW.

“We believe in these shows and we believe in the auspices of these executive producers,” said Pedowitz. “When the right ones come along, we’ll keep doing them.”

Things are relatively stable at The CW with the network only adding two new shows to its 2016-17 schedule – Frequency, based on the movie of the same name, and No Tomorrow, a romantic comedy. Pedowitz said the network’s current mix of 15 original series seems like the right mix to keep it in the year-round programming business.

“It gives us the ability to roll into the summer with scripted programming, which I think is important. I think it’s important for advertisers, for us as a network for identity, and it’s important to our affiliates,” said Pedowitz.

Addressing some of the network’s veteran shows, Pedowitz said negotiations are ongoing to bring back Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev for the show’s upcoming series finale. And Supernatural, the network’s longest-running show, is heading into season 13 with no sign of stopping.

“Creatively the show is terrific,” said Pedowitz. “If the ratings hold, the show could outlast my tenure in this job.”
