Saturday, May 2, the race for the Triple Crown begins with one of the biggest events in horse racing: the Kentucky Derby.

The countdown has already begun, with only so much time to place bets and make your mint juleps.

Churchill Downs will soon fill with prize-winning horses, racing fans and epic hats, so before the races begin, let’s re-live past years of the most important two minutes in sports.

NBC Sports kicks off this year’s coverage emphasizing the tradition of the race with “Beneath the Spires:”

2015:

NBC sent out a Save the Date this month to all racing fans, putting the state of Kentucky in the forefront of its initial messaging.

2014: Winner: California Chrome

Last year’s introduction to the 140th Kentucky Derby had an onslaught of action before slowing down a bit and focusing on the relationship between jockey and horse.

2013: Winner: Orb

The Kentucky Derby was grouped with “championship season” in 2013, using the year’s popular promo song, “Hall of Fame.”

2012: Winner: I’ll Have Another

NBC Sports promoted all three races together in 2012, touting the excitement to the events that year in “The Road to The Triple Crown.”

2011: Winner: Animal Kingdom
