Apple TV Plus’ new series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, spans 63 years – from 1952 to 2015 – and two cities – Tokyo and San Francisco. Shine’s main titles for the Godzilla-inspired series reflect its dual timelines, locations, and in the case of Cate (Anna Sawai), families.
In 2014, Godzilla fights the Titans in San Francisco, leveling the city and revealing to all that giant monsters are real and unstoppable. By 2017, Cate is settling her father’s affairs in Tokyo when she learns that he had a secret family there and that she has a previously unknown brother, Kentaro (Ren Watabe). Cate and Kentaro team up to figure out their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch, leading them to Army officer Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell). The series also travels back in time to 1952, where we meet a much younger Shaw (Wyatt Russell) and learn how he first stumbled across Monarch and gained the information that now threatens it.
The series comes from Legendary Television and Apple TV Plus. It’s executive produced by Chris Black, Matt Fraction, Matt Shakman, Joby Harold, Tory Tunnell, Andy Goddard, Brad Van Arragon, Andrew Colville, Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters debuted on Apple TV Plus on Friday, November 17, with episodes dropping each week.
