History as a TV channel has become synonymous with WWII documentaries, scripted series “Vikings” and reality brands “American Pickers” and “Pawn Stars.” But recently, it felt the need to branch out for its younger history buffs as well.

Thus Planet H was born, a division of History where kids, primarily 7-11-year-olds, can learn by playing. The first two games of this initiative are out now: “Empire Run” and “Frontier Heroes,” with a third planned for later this year. Both games, created in partnership with RED Games, are available on iOS, Android and Kindle platforms for $2.99.

In “Empire Run,” gamers race through empires of history such as Ancient Egypt, the Ming Dynasty or Rome, where they collect coins and artifacts to defeat enemies.

“Frontier Heroes” takes the user through American history from pre-Colonial days through the Revolution and the Gold Rush. The game presents challenges unique to each era like panning for gold or helping the Boston Tea Party.

“We are excited to unveil Planet H and this new world of fun and learning for kids as part of the HISTORY brand,” said Dan Suratt, EVP of digital media and brand and content licensing at A+E Networks (History’s parent company). “There is a void in the marketplace around high-quality, historically inspired content that is dynamic and engaging for kids. Planet H is launching mobile first, but it is a long-term initiative with great potential to reach children with an array of content and products.”

History’s new Planet H is an expansion into education where the History brand already lives, but presenting it in a digestible way to younger viewers.
