The biggest challenge for Comic-Con attendees is picking which highlights on the event’s massive agenda to devote their attention to. The biggest challenge for the presenters is garnering that attention.
Two media companies are ensuring convention-goers’ attention by mounting major takeovers of strategic locales in places that can’t be ignored.
First off, Warner Bros. Entertainment will cover the grounds at San Diego’s Bayfront Park for what it is calling Lawn Con. Running July 18-21, the family-oriented affair will feature a colorful array of characters and replicas culled from Warner Bros. Animation, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Warner Bros. Pictures. Highlights include enormous inflatable versions of “Teen Titans Go!” stalwarts Beast Boy, Cyborg, Raven, Robin and Starfire; life-size LEGO models of both Bilbo Baggins’ underground home in the film “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and DC Comics’ characters Batman, Robin and The Joker; and a replica of Scooby Doo and the Gang’s hot ride, the Mystery Machine.
With Bayfront Park located just steps from the convention floor, Lawn Con intends to pose unavoidable allure for both kids and adults as they enter Comic-Con, and could be, for many of them, one of their first takeaways from the event. You know what they say about first impressions…
Meanwhile, Syfy, following a successful 2012 Comic-Con introduction to its new series “Defiance,” will try to repeat that success with a 2013 Comic-Con launch of its newest scripted series, “Helix.”
To that end, the network will unveil a larger-than-life “Helix” wrap around the Marriott Marquis & Marina Hotel, adjacent to Comic-Con headquarters in the San Diego Convention Center. Syfy hopes fans will engage with the display, retweeting images of it to release clips of the “Helix” Comic-Con reel prior to its FOUR Comic-Con panels.
Just in case a banner around an entire building isn’t enough to snag attendees’ interest, Syfy is hyping the returning “Defiance” by transforming local restaurant MaryJane’s Cafe into Café Defiance, an immersive experience featuring video displays, game play and interactive elements, including the chance to win a “Defiance” prize pack by tweeting Café photos using #DefianceSDCC. Show character Bioman also will be wandering around offering photo ops.
Syfy is aggregating all social activity at Syfy.com/ComicCon, ensuring even fans who can’t attend the festivities in person don’t miss a minute of the fun.
