“Raw,” “dark” and “real” describes the fight scenes in Netflix’s sci-fi series Altered Carbon, set in a future where consciousness can be digitized and human bodies are interchangeable.
Cast members and Executive Producer Laeta Kalogridis go behind the scenes to talk about the training that went into creating intense moments that incorporate a wide range of techniques such as taekwondo, ji ji su, wrestling, judo and knife combat.
“We’re always in constant training for all these fights … sometimes we spend two or three hours a day,” says Martha Higareda, who plays police officer Kristin Ortega.
The series, based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, follows Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman, The Killing) the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. He is brought back to life after 250 years by Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy) the richest man on Earth to solve Bancroft’s attempted murder for the chance to live again in a world he doesn’t recognize.
Altered Carbon premieres February 2 on Netflix.
