Cast and crew from Netflix’s sci-fi series Altered Carbon talk about what went into creating a world where nobody really dies in the streamer’s latest promo.
Set 250 years in the future, life can be extended indefinitely with new technology. As Netflix puts it, “where you can change your body like changing clothes, nothing is eternal … except life itself.”
The series follows Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman, The Killing) the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned, “on ice,” for centuries until Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), a wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself. As the investigation progresses, Kovacs comes to learn that his past isn’t nearly as buried as he thought.
Kinnaman, along with executive producer and showrunner Laeta Kalogridis, delve into the backstory of the show.
Altered Carbon is produced by Skydance Television, with David Ellison, Dana Goldbert and Marcy Ross serving as executive producers along with Steve Blackman and Mythology Entertainment partners Brad Fischer and James Vanderbilt. The first episode is directed by Game of Thrones’ Miguel Sapochnik, who oversaw season 6’s “Battle of the Bastards” and “Winds of Winter” episodes.
The series premieres February 2 on Netflix.
