Today in a feature by “Wired,” the tech magazine analyzes the stark imperfections in key art for AMC’s “Breaking Bad.”

Photographer Frank Ockenfels III, who also has created key art for AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and “Mad Men,” FX’s “American Horror Story” and “Louie” and The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” has created the key art for “Breaking Bad’s last two years.

According to the piece in “Wired,” “Breaking Bad” showrunner Vince Gilligan wants to “keep up the intensity,” so Ockenfels uses the natural backdrops of Albuquerque to create the darkly realistic look for which he is known.

Ockenfels chooses lower resolution cameras, as today’s super high resolution cameras created images that were too pristine, forcing Ockenfels’ team to “retouch the perfectness out of them.” The key art captures the raw characters that this cast has created, and keeping the small imperfections only makes the dark realism that much more effective.
