Patrick Warburton makes his debut as the iconic narrator in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, as Netflix released a first trailer and set a Friday, January 13 premiere date for the adaptation of Daniel Handler’s young adult novels.

The series recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans—Violet, Klaus, and Sunny—whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling his many devious plans and disguises, in order to discover clues to their parents’ mysterious death.

The teaser features Warburton narrating as Snicket, warning viewers about the depressing story from a dimly-lit Netflix studio packed gags, like a box of “Very Flammable Dandelions” and a slate listing a director named “Monty Kensicle,”—an anagram of “Lemony Snicket.”

As he talks about Netflix’s entire crew suffering from low morale due to the upsetting nature of the series, the upbeat, villainous voice of Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Olaf, can be heard off screen.

“So please, don’t make the same mistake as Netflix has and look away before this dire tale is even filmed, and avoid the cruel whimsy and whimsical cruelty of what’s to come,” Snicket says.

Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events also stars Joan Cusack as Justic Strauss, Malina Weissman as Violet Baudelaire and Louis Hynes as Klaus Baudelaire.

The eight-episode series is executive produced by Emmy Award winner Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler.
