Women have always been on TV, and many of the medium’s most beloved icons—Jean Stapleton, Mary Tyler Moore, Lucille Ball, Bea Arthur, Diahann Carroll, Isabel Sanford, Candice Bergen—broke ground in their own ways. Some were mothers, others were career women, others were both, but all of them made their mark.

In recent years, the ways women are portrayed on TV has evolved at an ever-quicker rate, representing an array of diversity. Today, women on TV are warriors, queens and even superheroes, and they come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Just like the world in which we live.
