ESPN launched a trailer for upcoming documentary Pin Kings, which will air on the network’s weekly program “SC Featured,” as part of a multi-platform storytelling presentation.
The hour-long film chronicles the true story of Kevin Pedersen and Alex DeCubas, co-captains of their high school wrestling team in Miami who ended up on opposite sides of the drug war. DeCubas became a national drug kingpin with connections to the Colombian cartel, and Pedersen became a DEA agent charged with arresting his former teammate.
The ESPN2 broadcast at 8 p.m. on Monday, August 22 follows a 16-part podcast the network began rolling out earlier on August 1, with the final podcast coinciding with the airing of the documentary. It will culminate with a 5,000-word article in ESPN The Magazine. The story is also accompanied by a website featuring the full magazine story, interactive maps, graphics and animations.
The Columbia Journalism Review says ESPN’s marketing campaign around Pin Kings “suggests a coming of age for mulit-platform storytelling.”
“The project turned into a huge effort across television, audio, print and digital and has become an example of how to execute a multi-platform story with lots of moving parts,” the Columbia Journalism Review wrote.
