ABC is releasing three of its new fall comedies ahead of their broadcast premieres in order to build some buzz.

The premiere episodes of “The Goldbergs,” “Trophy Wife” and “Back in the Game” are now available via Watch ABC and Hulu, three weeks ahead of their official launches on ABC.

The tactic of releasing a streaming pilot ahead of its broadcast premiere has worked for broadcast networks in the past, perhaps most notably for Fox’s “New Girl,” which has enjoyed strong numbers for its streaming without seeing a significant loss in its premiere ratings.

Hulu says that more pilots will be available in the coming weeks, but nothing else is finalized now. All three pilots premiere on ABC the week of September 23.

Brief Take: This is common strategy for broadcasters to try to build some word of mouth ahead of the fall season. By limiting it to the network’s comedy lineup, younger audiences are more likely to flock to the streaming premieres and spread word (tweet about it), inspiring others to do the same or check out the pilot when it launches on ABC.
